Seating Players for DDAL Online Games

DRAFT

The site alonlinetools.net is a freely provided service to assist Dungeons and Dragons Adventurers League (DDAL) players and Dungeon Masters (DMs) get together to play DDAL legal games.

The DMs are all volunteers.  The Quest of the Week (QotW) DMs commit to run a minimum of two QotW modules each month while they are members of the program, and to uphold the community standards which are consistent across all AL games no matter where they are run.

The composition of a DM's table is ultimately at the discretion of the DM concerned. For example, it would be unreasonable to expect a DM to automatically seat:

  • more players than the DM felt s/he could handle, especially if a maximum had been specified,
  • players who had already played the module, especially if new players only were requested,
  • players who are playing inattentively or unresponsively or otherwise slowing the game (disruptive play),
  • players who persistently question the DMs rulings, or interrupt other players (disruptive play),
  • players who are undermining the actions of other players or the party as a whole (disruptive play),
  • players who act in a manner that constitutes harassment or bullying or otherwise makes the DM or other players uncomfortable.

In short, each DM has the right to determine who plays in her or his games.  QotW DMs especially are encouraged to display professionalism in their dealings with players at all times, but apart from giving priority to new players who have not played the QotW module that week over those who have played it, it is up the each DM to determine how s/he will manage signups.

QotW DMs have also been encouraged to delete game signups in a variety of situations, such as when a particular player:

  1. has kindly informed the DM s/he can no longer make the game,
  2. is signed up for another game at the same time,
  3. is already playing in another game at the same time,
  4. has not responded to DM e-mails as requested,
  5. has not provided the requested documentation for their character in the requested timeframe,
  6. does not have their character ready to play at start time,
  7. has already played the QotW and there are players who wish to play who haven't,
  8. has been a "no-show" for previous games without offering a timely apology or explanation, or
  9. has not been offered a place in the game.

It is especially important that game signups are kept clear of players who will not be playing, as the presence of alternates discourages new players from signing up.  But it remains at the discretion of each DM as to whether or when they will delete signups.

Players are encouraged to demonstrate their enthusiasm to play and politely request a space in the next game.  Please make the DM's experience a positive one by respecting their wishes and rulings.  This is particularly important in the AL Online region where there is no store owner, organizer or convention staff member present to provide immediate assistance in the event that a DM should feel unsafe or have difficulty resolving conflict.

DMs are encouraged to strive for excellence and fairness as much as possible, and also be receptive to constructive feedback.  All members of the AL Online community should endeavour to provide a supportive environment for DMs which rewards them for volunteering their time and helps keep them in the program.
